Sirens registered a very difficult win over San Giljan. who succumbed to Sirens’ final 3-0 run yesterday.

Sirens side now wait eagerly today’s derby between leaders Neptunes and Sliema, where a win for the Blues would be more welcome for Pierre Borg’s side.

The Saints had a positive start as they closed the first session 3-1 ahead. Matthew Zammit had two fine goals from the centre, making use of his utter strength in that position.

Zammit opened the score after 53 seconds and then San Giljan missed on a Montfort man-up two minutes later.

Clint Mercieca equalised momentarily for Sirens but John Xerri de Caro put Ian Azzopardi’s side in the lead 20 seconds later and then Zammit got his brace before the session’s end.

Sirens managed to equalise once again at 3-3 after Paul Fava scored the second session’s first goal. David Cutajar then beat Keith Schembri a minute from time.

The second session ended with a penalty on both sides. Marco Cuk converted for the Saints while Sirens’ Tamas Mercx, scored on the other side.

The third session was again a balanced affair Privitera was excluded after fouling Zammit and John Xerri de Caro turned the ball into the Sirens’ net from close range off a rebound flick.

Two Zammit exclusions in the 19th minute were not converted by Sirens who equalised through Mercx.

The game was decided in the final session. San Giljan took the lead when Cuk scored with a scorcher over Grech’s head.

Seconds later Sirens equalised at 6-6 through a David Cutajar delicate lob after Lanzon opted for double marking in the centre.

The lead went the Saints’ way 25 seconds after when Edward Cachia flicked in from close range on Montfort’s third personal foul.

In the 29th minute, Zammit was sent off and was lucky not to have suffered further penalties when he showed clear dissent towards the referees.

Sirens made it 7-7 when Mercx grabbed his personal hat-trick.

Sirens took the lead when Charles Zammit found the left corner and then, just 40 seconds later, Sirens made it 9-7 when Cutajar received a Fava assist and beat Schembri for his hat-trick, as Cuk opted for help some metres away.

Sirens closed with the final horn when Mercieca scored off an accurate Fava cross-pass.
