I read with disbelief the recommendation made to MEPA for a two-storey house and swimming pool to be built next to Gozo’s prehistoric Xaghra Stone Circle (TMIS, 29 July).

Are we crazy or what? What is happening to this country? Such a thing should not have been recommended in the first place. I am no archaeologist but I do know that it is not enough to preserve the site itself but also its surroundings in order to study and understand such an important archaeological discovery as the Xaghra Circle.

When are we going to recognise once and for all the importance and uniqueness of our vast historical heritage? I could ask what we are going to leave for future generations, but since it seems that it all boils down to money these days, when are we going to have the good sense to invest in and use our historical heritage to make these islands a unique experience for tourists?

We can build golf courses, 5-star hotels and so on, but other, much bigger, countries can boast of having more and better hotels and golf courses. But no other country can match our unique temples and our fascinating history that followed and this is what we have to safeguard!
