Gymstars GC recently hosted the biggest gymnastics event in Malta for the fourth consecutive year with the participation of more than 150 gymnasts coming from nine foreign and two Maltese clubs.
The competition proved to be a great satisfaction, considering the results obtained by the club's gymnasts. It was evident that the useful contribution by the club's coaches and officials and the hard work they are doing is bearing fruit.
The competition produced high level of gymnastics with athletes coming from such strong countries like England, Wales and Sweden. This served as a good learning experience for the locals for future commitments.
The foreigners were strong and dominated the seniors' girls competitions. The clubs of Olga, Tolworth, Europa and MEPA between them won most of the medals and having athletes of high standard such as Natasha Gwalter, Samantha Golding, Lauren Lethbridge, Sasha Wright and others ,all showing elegance, great skills and some very interesting moves.
However, Gymstars GC should feel proud of their athletes as there was joy and satisfaction for all. The Junior Girls were the most impressive and they continued showing progress after the recent good performances in Holland.
The girls, considered as a bright hope for the future, gained several medals and they all managed to get a place on the podium in different equipment.
Mia Vickery was at her best on vault and uneven bars where she won gold. Another gold went to Kirsty Caruana on floor, while a silver medal went to Tara Dalli on vault, Martina Galea on beam, Nicole Pace on floor. Bronze also went to Nicole Pace on the beam. Adreanna Zammit was unfortunate when she just missed a medal by a very small difference.
In the other girls category, D12+, Shannon Parker had a most successful day, finishing second overall and getting gold on vault and silver on uneven bars and beam.
Jessica Bugeja was also outstanding, finishing third overall and getting silver on vault and bronze on uneven bars, while Corinne Gatt got on the podium twice, finishing third on beam and floor.
In the Boys' category, B7 Under, Karl Cumbo gave an encouraging performance, winning the overall title and also getting medals on all routines, gold on high bar and rings, silver on pommel horse and parallel bars and bronze on vault.
Ryan Busuttil was also prominent, finishing second overall in the D8-11 category. He brought out his best on floor and pommel horse with a gold medal and also silver on parallel bars and bronze on rings. Another athlete who left his mark was Andrea Mugliette getting gold on vault and bronze on pommel horse.
In the other category, Gymstars had Miguel Galea finishing second overall and parallel bars; Keith Gravino did well to finish third overall, with gold on pommel horse and silver on high bar.
In another category, Simon Gravino captured silver on pommel horse and bronze on floor, while Matthias Camilleri showed progress in winning silver on pommel horse.
In the Boys’ category A12-15, Jeremy Saywell from Acro Jumpers showed class in finishing second overall and winning gold on floor, pommel horse and vault and also getting silver on parallel bars and rings.
His teammates also did well: Terence Gatt got gold on rings and bronze on vault, while Andre Buhagiar won gold on vault.
Acro Jumpers had also Rochelle Gatt from the girls section C12-15, who gave a satisfactory performance in winning silver on beam.
Gymstars received appreciation for opening the competition to athletes from Special Olympics. Natalie Galea and Brian Muscat gave a credible performance and should be ready for the World Special Olympic Games to be held in China next October.
After the competition, the foreigners expressed their satisfaction for a well organised competition and an exciting and spectacular event.
