The need for more space in Grand Harbour for vessels that need repair to be able to berth was discussed during a meeting Malta Labour Party leader Alfred Sant had with representatives of Cassar Ship Repair Limited as part of a consultation exercise the MLP is holding on the port’s development.

Company chairman Tony Cassar said that the company has been operating for 40 years and employs over 80 people. He spoke about the problem of lack of berthing space, and this unfortunately meant loss of business.

He said that a quay known as “tat-tinda tal-patata” is not being used at present. With some dredging work the quay could be used once again, he said.

Dr Sant said that Grand Harbour could give a great contribution to the economy through the maritime services it offers. A balance needed to be found between transshipment, ship repair, yacht marinas and cruise liner services. The MLP is working on a plan to regenerate the area, Dr Sant said.
