Teenager Kept in custody

Malta Independent Saturday, 11 August 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

A teenager was yesterday taken into custody after being found guilty of breaching bail conditions.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named due to being a minor, was facing proceedings for his involvement in a fight which left another youngster with serious injuries. He was charged last June.

One of the teenager’s bail conditions was to be home by 9pm. However, Police Inspector Mario Tonna testified that he saw the youngster last Wednesday, seriously drunk, being carried on someone else’s shoulders during the feast of St Gaetano in Hamrun after 11pm.

The officer said that the accused was not arrested on the spot because he did not want to create a panic; in addition to this, he wanted to give him time to sober up.

The inspector said that when arrested the next day, the youngster actually tried to assault an officer at the police station.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano ordered his immediate arrest.
