Please allow me to comment very briefly on what you wrote in your leader of 5 August where you gave the impression that the advent of the euro will be the magic formula to create Malta’s future economic miracle.

Incidentally, Philip M. Beattie’s very interesting and informed article, published in the same issue of your newspaper, “Ditching the Maltese lira: What they didn’t tell us”, completely rubbished all the hogwash of EU propaganda about the euro, to which our people have been exposed, day in day out, for the last 12 months or so. Hence I have no need to repeat some of the arguments made so brilliantly by Philip Beattie.

All I ask is whether you, sir, have ever devoted just a few moments to ask yourself why the Swedes, the Danes and the British have refused to ditch their own currency in favour of the euro? And how on earth their economies have performed better than most, if not all, of those eurozone member States.

When you do find the time to devote yourself to this “sixty-four thousand dollar question”, perhaps you would care to inform readers of the result of your deliberations.
