Traffic congestion, the need for a good public transport system and for more means of transport, including by sea, were among subjects discussed at Sliema local council during a meeting with Labour leader Alfred Sant.

The councillors, led by mayor Marina Arrigo, said that traffic congestion in Sliema was very serious and could become worse if not given attention, because of the building developments taking place. A better managed transport system was needed – for instance, buses leaving St Julian’s were already full by the time they reached Sliema.

There was no marine transport system which could link Sliema with areas along the shores of Grand Harbour, which would also help ease traffic congestion on land. A park and ride system at Sliema would also help.

Sliema’s population was growing older, and this was one of the challenges the council was facing, the meeting heard. At Sliema they needed to have services of a social nature to suit an ageing population.
