The Indomitable ‘Dom’

Malta Independent Thursday, 16 August 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Kindly allow me to pass a comment about the letter The indomitable ‘Dom’ by correspondent Valerie Borg (TMID, 11 August) since, in this same letter, the correspondent referred to (what she called) a conflict between Mintoff and Alfred Sant “during the tempestuous one year and 10 months of a Labour government with Dr Sant the man at the helm…”.

I would like to point out that, on Tuesday, 9 June 1998, Alfred Sant repeatedly called Mintoff a “traitor” during a Birgu (Vittoriosa) mass meeting. This sorry episode, now familiar to one and all, was never mentioned in the book entitled Mexxejja Hassieba u Deputati Laburisti 1920-2000 by Francis Galea (SKS/Sensiela Kotba Socjalisti) in, yet another, left-wing attempt to censor information. Dr Sant never apologised for this obscenity.

One wonders why Valerie Borg is now praising Mintoff since, in a November 1997 Capital Radio 1997/1998 Budget debate against me she frequently insulted Mintoff by calling him a “traitor” on air. This was a live programme chaired by Saviour Sammut and, on her part, a rather transparent attempt to tow the (Socialist) party line.

To this I had objected, saying that although I had hardly ever agreed with any of the measures he had proposed and, eventually, carried out, in the past, this did not give anyone the right to resort to slander.
