Playing their first friendly match during their training camp in Slovakia yesterday, the Maltese national team obtained an impressive 4-0 win over local side SFM Senec.

It was a convincing win for Dusan Fitzel’s formation which was in command right from the start of the match.

At the interval the Maltese Selection was leading 2-0 with goals from Gilbert Agius and Terence Scerri.

The first arrived on 38 minutes when Agius responded magnificently to a cross from Etienne Barbara.

Three minutes later, it was 2-0 as the Maltese added another from Scerri who had received a cross from Agius.

In the second half, despite several substitutions made by Fitzel, the Maltese continued to dominate and it was no surprise that they scored another two goals.

Andrew Cohen converted a penalty for the third goal, after he was involved in a solo move which ended with the opponents’ goalkeeper pulling him down.

The final goal was scored by Cleaven Frendo who had received a perfect cross from George Mallia.

Malta lined up as follows:

A. Hogg (O. Borg), P. Pullicino (G. Mallia), I. Azzopardi (S. Wellman), B. Said (A. Xuereb), J. Mifsud (K. Scicluna), G. Agius (R. Bajada), R. Briffa, J. Pace, T. Scerri (C. Frendo), A. Cohen, E. Barbara.

The team now resumes its camp with training sessions in the morning and afternoon till the weekend, when there is a possibility that another friendly match will be played.

The squad will leave Slovakia on Sunday for Tirana. On Wednesday 22 August, Malta plays Albania in a friendly match.
