Fgura United staged one of the biggest upsets in this tournament’s history when they defeated First Division side Marsa 2-0 and thus claimed top spot of Group A and a place in this edition’s final. It will be an all third division clash as Qrendi are the other outfit.

Fgura did not show any inferiority complex in the opening exchanges and took the lead in the 9th minute when Rodney Galea sneeked from behind the defence and beat Spiteri with a diagonal move after a nice combined move by the boys in green.

Marsa tried to get back into the game and in one instance went close but Testaferrata was on hand to clear off the fatal line what looked to be a certain goal.

Marsa forced Fgura in their own half in the opening stages of the second half with United defending with the skin of their teeth at times. The port siders had a goal disallowed for off-side and on another occassion were unlucky when Pace again cleared off the line with the aid of the crossbar. Keeper Farrugia made some other timely interventions to secure Fgura’s slim lead.

As the match drew to its end, Fgura came out of their defensive shell and returned to menace Marsa’s backline. A Lia shot skimmed the crossbar and minutes later Fgura secured the victory with the second goal. Spiteri parried a shot with Ellul managing to score from the rebound.

Tomorrow Kirkop and Mgarr will play the last of the group stage match. The final will be staged on 28 August.
