One major concept to be observed in any organisation, body, authority or whatever, either local or national, if achievements are targeted, is the very intelligent advice that “United we stand, divided we fall”.

That is the my basic reaction to what Dr Josie Muscat had to say in his letter, headlined: Marsascala businessmen up in arms, carried in your paper of 17 August.

I am in no way (no offence intended, Dr Muscat) attaching any importance to the singer, but I must admit that I give at least 80 per cent backing to the song.

What Dr Muscat, a local councillor, is suggesting makes sense. I have only one reservation about the involvement of WasteServ in the matter. I do not condone tying any ribbons to WasteServ, when the people of Marsascala are at loggerheads with the same WasteServ regarding their support for the reconstruction on a bigger footprint of the Sant’ Antnin Recycling Plant.

So, in my opinion, there should not in anyway be any semblance of a truce with WasteServ that might prejudice the objections of the Marsascala residents to the Government’s intention to carry on with the dismantling and rebuilding of the recycling plant.

Despite any interpretation that the Nationalist Government was given the go-ahead by the European Union to carry on with the rebuilding of the recycling plant, the issue is far from settled. The people of Marsascala are not ready to take no for an answer and if the businessmen are up in arms regarding the monti along the promenade, likewise so are we where the recycling plant is concerned.

The issue is far from being final. So please, Dr Muscat and the rest of the councillors, forget about the idea of encouraging WasteServ to act as sponsors for embellishment of Marina Street, Triq is-Salini and Triq il-Gardiel.

I am not against the idea of developing a system that will make the promenade cleaner and maybe more commercially viable, giving a breath of fresh air to efforts to increase business for the bars and restaurants in the area. But – again – please do not involve WasteServ.

The ‘Scalians should in no way have to feel obliged to WasteServ, which was plainly not considerate at all to their health and financial

interests where the recycling plant is concerned.

Yes, Dr Muscat, I do agree that the loyalty of the seven elected members of the local council is towards the ‘Scalians and not the political party that proposed them for election. I firmly believe in a local council

for the residents and not for the party.

That is why, despite my political beliefs, I do not see any colours in the duties of the local council. I do not fancy the singer, but rather consider the message in the song.

So please, in the best interests of our locality, dear councillors, do find a solution to the divergences that is dividing and rather ridiculing the performance of the local council and stand united, first and foremost, for a better Marsascala in every sense.

We live in a place that has been burdened with projects and over-development that have entirely ruined any meaning to the claim that Marsascala is a tourist area. So, dear councillors, let common sense prevail and pull the same rope in the best interests of our locality.
