The stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 282,965 at the end of June, up by 2,723 in the second quarter. Of the total, 76 per cent were private vehicles, while commercial vehicles made up 16.3 per cent. The number of new licences issued during the second quarter of 2007 amounted to 3,088. Private vehicles accounted for 2,013 new licences, or 65.2 per cent of the total.

In the quarter, the largest proportion of new licences were issued to private vehicles falling within Class 1 (under 1300cc). This class accounted for 1,232 new licences, while vehicles in Class 2 (1301-1449cc) accounted for 243.

The number of newly-licensed new motor vehicles amounted to 2,103, or 68.1 per cent of the total, while newly licensed second-hand motor vehicles amounted to 985, or 31.9 per cent of the total.

The number of vehicles scrapped amounted to 559 during the period under review. Of those scrapped, 490 were private vehicles or 87.7 per cent. Of these, Class 1 vehicles (under 1300cc) accounted for the largest number scrapped, being 352 vehicles.

Nine vehicles were exported, one less than in the previous quarter.
