The Institute for International Cooperation (IIZ) of the German Adult Education Association (DVV) has just published a 76-page monograph on adult education in Malta written by Professor Peter Mayo of the Faculty of Education, University of Malta. It comprises a grounded study of the area, based on perusal of documents and in-depth interviews with adult educators and organisers from the State and NGO sectors. It also draws on the existing literature regarding adult education in Malta. Importance is attached to both formal and non-formal provision in the field. A comprehensive list of references is provided as well as a chronology of landmarks in the development of this particular sector of the Maltese educational system. This is the 56th volume in the IIZ-DVV’s series International Perspectives in Adult Education edited by Prof. (H) Dr Heribert Hinzen.

The volume consists of (1) a preface penned by Dr Michael Samlowski from the IIZ-DVV; (2) an initial preliminary discussion regarding adult education in Malta; (3) a Historical Outline of Adult Education in Malta; (4) a lengthy review of contemporary provision in the area and (5) a final critical analysis that includes an exploration of options for future provision and policy-making in the area. The volume also contains a number of black and white illustrations.
