Heritage Malta will be organising another Heritage Trail to give more information about, and create further awareness of Malta’s rich historical patrimony.

The next Heritage Trail will focus on the life and artistic legacy of Michelangelo Merisi di Caravaggio.

The trail will begin in Valletta with a visit to St John’s co-Cathedral to see Caravaggio’s two masterpieces – the St Jerome and the Martyrdom of St John the Baptist.

It will continue at the maritime city of Vittoriosa, once the seat of the Inquisition Tribunal in Malta and also intimately linked to Caravaggio, as he was called to appear in front of the Inquisition shortly after his arrival in Malta. History will come alive at the Inquisitor’s Palace, as Caravaggio will be seen on the witness bench giving his version of the facts. The trail will continue in Fort St Angelo, where Caravaggio was imprisoned and from where he escaped to Italy.

The trail will end at the National Museum of Fine Arts with a brief overview of the different ways of interpreting Caravaggio’s style by the artists who followed his artistic legacy, known as the “Caravaggisti”.

The Heritage Trail will be held on Saturday, 15 September, meeting in front of St John’s co-Cathedral at 9am.
