Fitness For the Over 50s

Malta Independent Sunday, 26 August 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

ALAN PACE, fitness instructor and personal trainer encourages the over 50s to take their courage in their hands and take up exercising.

As the end of summer approaches many of us resolve to get back into shape and back to the gym, however, there is an ill founded perception that gym and fitness is reserved solely for the young and agile. Often, ads and advice circulating in the media excludes the older generations.

For older adults, unless experts provide advice, it can be dangerous. If you are 50 or older, be sure to get accurate information especially designed for your physique and lifestyle.

Here are some tips that will help you find the time, the activities and places you need to turn your resolution into reality.

Get a check-up

Meet with your doctor to see whether you will need to consider any special modifications before starting an exercise programme. If necessary, get a clearance to begin any kind of physical activity. Remember that you want to improve your health not the other way round.

Know your options

Before starting any programme, examine your options. Pick a programme you know you will enjoy. Some individuals like to go to a gym and do a structured workout, while others enjoy some exercise outdoors. Either will help improve your fitness, I recommend working out in the gym because it’s within a controlled environment and safer.

Determine your participation style

Would you prefer taking a class or going solo? Are you a morning person or a night person? Does indoor fitness appeal to you, or would you prefer to play outside? I recommend joining a group! It is more fun to sweat with a partner!

Start Slowly

Many people are eager to get started and sometimes overdo it, which usually makes them sore and can make them want to stop. It is very important that you listen to your body and train accordingly. Do not compare with younger individuals for obvious reasons. Take your pace and enjoy it.

Make a date

Find or convince a friend to start exercising with you. This will help you keep motivated. Try booking a session with a personal trainer or a group training class. That appointment makes it more likely you will do the exercise you much need.

Join a class

Select an exercise class appropriate for your health status and ability. These classes or courses are made specifically with you in mind. You will be with your peers, people with the same goals that will not make you feel intimidated.

Wear the right shoes

Foot comfort and support is important for all impact physical activities If you have arthritis, diabetes or orthopaedic problems, you can remain physically active with the help of appropriate shoes.

Participate in events

Once you are more physically fit, set a goal to take part in a charity event. Prepare to walk, run or cycle to raise money for a special cause. Again, ask a friend to be your exercise and event partner.

If it hurts, don’t do it

Work around pain, not through it. Remember pain is a sign to stop! Forget the notion of no pain no gain. The truth is no train no gain!

Reward yourself

Once you have reached your goal, treat yourself to something that reminds you what a good job you have done and encourages you to continue. Make it something that feeds your spirit, but is not necessarily food or an expensive purchase.

These are just a few tips to guide you in the right track. The benefits of starting an exercise programme are endless and the best thing about them is that you will be the first one who enjoys them.

You will also experience increased energy and better sleep. Are these enough reasons to convince you that exercise is the key to live longer! And one last important thing… Don’t quit. Like brushing your teeth, make exercise part of your daily life.
