A petition signed by the residents of the St Thomas Bay area has been submitted to Marsascala local council and Urban Development and Roads Minister, Jesmond Mugliett.

The petition states that cars passing by at very high speed at any time of the day were disturbing the peace and quiet, and were also the cause of a number of accidents in the area.

The residents made a request for two speed cameras to be installed.

Contacted by The Malta Independent, Marsascala mayor Mario Calleja said that at the last local council meeting, the members could not reach an agreement regarding the installation of speed cameras. However, a proposal for the installation of two crash barriers, as well as road markings in the area, was accepted.

One of these crash barriers will be installed near the Re Del Pesce restaurant just before entering Gardier Street and the other will be installed just before the turning that leads to St Thomas Bay.

Mr Calleja also said that the two speed humps had had to be removed because their presence resulted in a number of car crashes. The local council did not take immediate action after the removal of the sleeping policemen because of policemen there surveying the area.
