A female inmate who was not allowed to leave the prison to visit her mother last week created a commotion that was soon under control, the Corradino Correctional Facility director said in a statement yesterday.

This was far from the “riot” that was described in a letter that was sent to the media earlier this week, the director said.

The female inmate involved was not eligible for prison leave and when she was denied this, she started throwing plastic chairs around and pulled a telephone that was hanging on a wall.

At this point, other female prisoners were taken out to the internal yard within the same section. In the confusion that followed, two female inmates entered the room used by the officers and at first refused to leave. They later agreed to do so without further trouble.

The director said that the female inmates involved were later locked in their cell as a precaution and there had never been a time when the lives of other prisoners had been under threat, the director said.

The director said that disciplinary action will be taken against the prisoners involved. No further incidents had been reported since then and the prison authorities were never informed that some female prisoners were being threatened by others.
