A 41-year-old was fined Lm500 (EUR1,165) after he pleaded guilty to insulting and threatening a police sergeant and other police officers on Thursday afternoon.

Before magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna, Carmel Pace from Birkirkara admitted that he had used indecent language when he was under the influence of alcohol.

He was further charged with being in possession of a sharp and pointed object without a licence and with relapsing.

Magistrate Apap Bologna noted that the accused had filed an early guilty plea, had apologised to the police and had a relatively clean criminal record.

The magistrate did, however, warn Pace that he would be sent to jail immediately should he commit another offence.

Police inspector Ramon Mercieca prosecuted and Dr Joe Giglio appeared for the accused.
