Malta’s junior girls won the gold medal after registering their third successive win yesterday evening in front of a large crowd.
They beat Monaco narrowly 64-63 to make sure of winning the tournament. Earlier they had beaten Andorra and Gibraltar. Yesterday, they had to come from behind in the third and final sessions to succeed in clinching their win.
The victory materialised in the final seconds and as the final buzzer sounded, there were wild scenes of celebration all around the arena.
The local girls must be proud of themselves, having fought back so gallantly to produce a grandstand finish to hold on to their unbeaten record.
Today they play their final match against Luxembourg. The match starts at 7pm
Top scorers for the Maltese girls yesterday were Christina Grima, 29, Leanne Sciberras, 15, and Abigail Muscat, 10. In another match played yesterday, Andorra beat Luxembourg 60-55.
