The Nationalist Party is clearly in a state of alarm. Now that EU membership is a closed case, the campaign is all redirected (again) to attack personally Labour leader Alfred Sant. The Nationalists have proved that they have nothing to offer. On the other hand, the Labour Party is clearly showing that it has the ideas and the energy to give this country the much-needed change. The Nationalists have now been in power for far too long, and Dr Gonzi’s attempt to look fresh could have never succeeded when one looks at the ministers making up his cabinet.
The Labour Party is moving like a fast train, with fresh new proposals being announced every day, after years of consultation with several parties from all the sectors within the Maltese society. The Nationalists are helpless looking at this train, and instead of trying to accelerate their vehicle, the only strategy being used is to rubbish Labour’s proposals and personally attacking Dr Sant.
In some cases, after rubbishing Labour’s proposals, the Nationalists have taken the same proposals on board. These are clear signs of a tired government, led by a weak leader who failed to keep his promise in starting a new way of doing politics. Dirty campaigning, corruption all over the place, arrogance, incompetence… sounds like nothing new to me!
The writing is on the wall. The Nationalists’ time is over. Dr Gonzi, if I were you, for the sake of national interest, instead of wasting more precious time, I would go for an election, and let the people decide whom to trust this time round.
