The editorial of this newspaper of 2 September was in my view a very poor attempt (to say the least) to mislead its readers on what Jason Micallef (MLP General Secretary) said in a closed activity for Labour supporters. What disappoints me most is that this editorial looks like being a reproduction of an unedited PN press statement.

The facts are very simple. Mr Micallef started his speech saying that the next Labour government would be one for all Maltese and Gozitans. This of course meant nothing for the PN spin doctors and the editor of The Malta Independent on Sunday.

Mr Micallef then went on to say that the Labour government would also be a government for all Labourites, as it would address the injustices they have suffered in the last 20 years of the PN regime. For the PN spin doctors and the editor of this newspaper that meant that the Labour government would only be a government for Labourites.

So according to the PN spin doctors and very unfortunately according to the editor of this newspaper, all those Labourites who have suffered injustices (in many cases very subtle but well organised and structured ones) do not have a right to be compensated (I do not mean financial compensation) for the injustices they have suffered. The PN knows that its days are numbered and will clutch at every straw to keep its nose above water, and this whole story is a shining example.

The way the PN has tried to mislead, misinform and deceive the Maltese electorate (its best attribute in recent history) in this purported “controversy” is very typical of their arrogance, which is the result of all the years in office. They pretend that only their interests (and those of the people around them) deserve to be addressed. In fact this is precisely what they have been doing for the last 20 years. Unfortunately, the editor allowed himself to be driven by this Nationalist spin. On the other hand, the same editor felt there was nothing wrong in what Daphne Caruana Galizia wrote in his newspaper a week before about Dr Alfred Sant, an article which brought a chorus of disapproval even from people who do not support Labour or Dr Sant.

I am not surprised that the Nationalist Party’s spin doctors (including those in the media) are stooping so low in their desperate attempts to try and steer their sinking ship towards safer waters. According to a Maltese idiom we all know what the pharmacist gives you!

At the same time however, I am very disappointed that the editor allowed himself to be driven by this very poor and mediocre PN spin.
