Credit is needed where credit is due. Daphne Caruana Galizia has hit the nail squarely on the head in her article Another bright idea (TMID, 6 September). The only compensation due to victims of crime should come from the perpetrators. Such a scheme as the one thought up by the authorities goes against the very essence of justice.

It has become the rule in this country that the honest and the responsible have to make good for the consequences of the irresponsible and the downright criminal. It is indeed a case of the welfare state gone mad.

Our politicians have become so accustomed to pilfering our taxes, while attempting to outdo each other in the attempt to come up with new ‘goodies’ in order to win some extra votes, that it no longer enters their heads – let alone their consciences – that they are indulging in nothing other than theft. If an individual commits ‘charity’ at someone else’s expense, he would be jailed but the State, it seems, can walk off with our wallets with impunity.

Sanity can only be regained when we cut the State down to size and the sooner we do it, the better. That used to be a popular battle cry when thousands of Maltese marched against the all-mighty Socialist machine. Can memories be so short?
