The General Workers’ Union has written to the executive head of Enemalta Corporation about the situation at the airport aviation section, to say it was not prepared to continue accepting long hours of uninterrupted work at the section because there were not enough workers to keep up with the work volume.

The union said it had written to the corporation about this on 13 August but it had not yet received any reply. In yesterday’s letter, the union pointed out that the situation was creating health and safety pressures on the workers because their kind of work entailed danger.

Certain important procedures were being ignored because of the volume of work and even foreign airlines had drawn attention to this. The aviation section had ignored everything, the union said. It all arose from the fact that the corporation was ignoring the agreement between it and the union relating to the worker complement.

The union said that failing immediate remedies by the corporation, the union would act to protect the workers’ interests. A copy of the letter was sent also to Industrial Relations and Employment director Noel Vella.
