Our Saviour’s chapel in Kalkara is being restored, with works now close to completion. Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit said when he went to see progress for himself, that the chapel was over 300 years old and the works were very specialised.

The chapel was one of the most advanced examples of deteriorating stonework, having both vertical and horizontal fissures in it and other damage which was allowing rainwater to seep in copiously, causing inestimable damage.

Much of the stonework was so deteriorated it had to be replaced, but it was not possible to replace all of it. Had that been done, the chapel would have practically had to be rebuilt. So they had replaced only the stonework which was most in need of it.

The work was going to cost some Lm60,000 and a new lighting system would be provided to illuminate the chapel. All had been done in collaboration with the parish priest, Fr Anton Galea, and the local council.
