A 73-year-old man from Zejtun died yesterday after he was involved in a traffic accident in Anton Buttigieg Road in Zejtun at around 6.15am yesterday.

The man was hit by a Hyundai driven by a 30-year-old man from Marsascala.

An ambulance was called on site but the man died from his injuries before the ambulance arrived. Duty magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna appointed several experts to help him in his inquiry. Police investigations are still under way.

Meanwhile, in a press statement, the Zejtun local council pointed out that there had unfortunately been another fatal accident in Triq President Anton Buttigieg and recalled it had been warning of the danger along this road but the authorities had not taken any action.

The council said that, together with the residents, it was insisting that this road, which from Bir id-Deheb leads to Marsascala, Zejtun beach, tas-Silg and Delimara, should be considered as an arterial road. It had also made various proposals to lessen the danger.

It had asked for pelican lights at the junction with Marsaxlokk Road, scene of a fatal accident. That was turned down. Among others it had also requested the use of a mobile speed camera but that too was turned down.

The council said it was clear that the traffic control authorities should assume responsibility for this road, classify it as arterial, and introduce measures to eliminate dangers as far as possible, for residents, motorists and pedestrians.
