Apart from being the title of a book of poetry and photography by poet Lino Buhagiar and photographer John Grech respectively, Particles of Fate includes a theatrical presentation of the work as well as an exhibition of a selection of the works in a framed format. This artistic event will form part of Notte Bianca Lejl Imdawwal and it will be performed three times on 6 October at the Mediterranean Institute Theatre Programme (MITP), St. Christopher Street, Valletta at 8pm, 9.30pm and 11pm. This event is being supported by Koperattiva Kulturali Universitarja (KKU).
The literary and photographic works in Particles of Fate are being presented to the public in the form of an ‘experience’ and an exhibition. “We call this event an ‘experience’ because we are striving to bring together many art forms into a unique collage, a single expression with many ‘voices’,” explains Lino Buhagiar.
John Grech adds: “Besides Lino’s poetry and my photography, we intend to bring into this fusion other art forms, namely music, dance and painting. In this way, we will offer the audience an experience of mind and senses.” The artists responsible for the artistic expressions to accompany poetry and photography are Theresa Lungaro Mifsud and Martin Spiteri. For John Grech, the flame of passion for photography was kindled when he was a young child and it has been burning brightly ever since. It is the glow of this flame that gives meaning to his life and enhances his work, which has been exhibited in Malta as well as in Guanajuato, Mexico, in February 2006.
Grech graduated in Labour Studies and Philosophy from the University of Malta. For him, philosophy and his photography are intricately bound. “The beauty, the mystery, the anguish of a universe ...” say the words which caption his website and this is precisely what one feels when viewing Grech’s photography.
Writing and life are synonymous for Lino Buhagiar who, at the age of twelve, decided that he was a writer and has never deviated from this conviction. He has given his life to his talent. Following his graduation as Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Malta, he went on to graduate with a Master’s degree in writing from Bretton Hall, College of the University of Leeds. Speaking to Lino brings to mind the words of Isaac Asimov: “I write for the same reason I breathe - because if I didn’t I would die.” His passion for writing includes poetry and long and short length fiction. Some of his work has been published in the UK.
“This project will explore a terrain never before ventured by artists in Malta. We hope to take the audience on a textured and virtual walk through the creative process we have ourselves experienced,” concludes Lino Buhagiar.
