Kids on Campus, Hilton-Malta, 34U and the Cleaner Technology Centre at the University of Malta, collaborated this summer to offer children a hands-on experience and a chance to take action and become more involved with the environment around them.

The thought behind the initiative is that environmental education is a process oriented towards the improvement of the day-to-day quality of life while providing children with opportunities and instruments to prevent future environmental problems as well as to start dealing with existing ones.

Children attending Kids on Campus are of a young age (three to 11 years), and through D Krocky Planet, indirectly the adult population was also reached. Each participating child outlined a small project that s/he was then to carry out at home or in the community. Each participant donated Lm2, the total of which (Lm100) was then presented to Rural Affairs and the Environment Minister George Pullicino at an evening organised by Hilton-Malta at the Portomaso Suite.

On the night, Mr Pullicino praised D Krocky Planet initiative and all who were involved in the project. Hilton-Malta, having both environmental and social protection high on their agenda, together with The Centre for Cleaner Technology and 34U showed appreciation to have been given the opportunity to participate in such a project.

Hilton-Malta, The Centre for Cleaner Technology and 34U were involved in setting up criteria and they commented that going through the children’s work proved to be very informative as the projects were very interesting and at times very creative.

The evening culminated in a tree-planting session where Mr Pullicino announced a three-day non-stop activity where some 9,000 tress will be planted, making a clear statement against the act of vandalism carried out in Mellieha last May. The activities will be held between Friday and Sunday.
