The Malta Rugby Football Union has signed an agreement with Melita Football Nursery for the use of the new facilities in Pembroke.

The Malta Rugby Football Union have embarked on a long term project to significantly increase the number of playing numbers, both at senior and junior levels. The project involves the introduction of rugby into schools, both at primary and secondary levels. The sprouting up of new artificial turf pitches at a number of public and private schools has made it more realistic to introduce the game to Maltese youngsters.

An equally important component of the plan involves the partnerships with the local football community. This trend is very similar to what is taking place in a number of European countries, whereby football and rugby complement each other for the benefit of the local community. Instead of competing with each other, it is apparent that there are a number of synergies between the two sports that should be exploited.

This is the intention of the Malta Rugby Football Union. The agreement signed with the Melita Football Nursery is one step in this plan, which includes other initiatives that are taking place with other local football clubs. The Malta Rugby Football Union is urging all interested local football clubs to contact the Union in order to discuss possible means of collaboration.

In other news, the Malta Rugby Football Union is currently recruiting interested persons wishing to start playing rugby and to join Malta’s fastest growing team sport. The MRFU is recruiting players of all ages and sexes with or without experience. Children as young as five years old can join in the fun too.
