Two mini five-a-side tournaments were organised recently for Under 13 and Under 16 Girls at the recently resurfaced pitch at the Centenary Stadium, Ta’ Qali.

These tournaments, which serve as a platform for launching new faces, were again organised by national women’s team coach Pierre Brincat and his assistant Alfred Zammit, under the auspices of the MFA.

Members of the MFA Women’s Committee, helped by some women’s national team players, acted as referees.

In the Under 13 category the competition was very balanced, with the improving Mgarr managing to pull away from the established teams of Hibernians and Birkirkara to win the tournament. The last-mentioned teams finished second and third respectively, followed by the promising Pembroke who succeeded in holding Birkirkara to a draw.

Mosta kept a clean score sheet when pipping Mgarr by one point in the Under 16 category. Birkirkara and Hibernians came next, with the spirited Marsa and newcomers Tarxien propping up the table.

MFA vice-president Ludovico Micallef, Chairman of the Women’s Football Committee, presented medals to all participants while thanking them and auguring a bright future for all the girls taking up the game.
