Money, Money, money

Malta Independent Friday, 21 September 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

You cannot fail to notice it upon entering a shop. Either price listed on objects in Maltese lira and in euros or a long list explicitly specifying the same thing. All this in aid of adapting to the laws of the EU in terms of the euro that will “befall” on us on 1 January, 2008. A tiny journey into the past. During the election of 1998 I can still remember those degrading billboards splattered all over Malta screaming, “Alfred Sant is not to be trusted” or an even more vulgar one “Dr Alfred Sant ruined a country”.

Back to the present… Wouldn’t it be a great idea that other billboards would be posted once again over the whole island, this time though describing exactly how much the wages of those who work with the government and those who work in private places are going to be raised to confirm to the laws of the EU?
