“Prime Minister should assume responsibility of leak”, “Labour leader asks PM to assume responsibility over drainage overflow”. These statements, carried in the local English language newspapers last Saturday were made by no other than the possible, though not probable, next Prime Minister of Malta, Dr Alfred Sant. Surely they will never be included in any quotations book worth 5 euros.

Is this was we can expect from Dr Alfred Sant if by a fat chance he is elected Prime Minister? Will he spend his day touring towns and villages looking for seeping drainage, for broken pavements or for barking dogs causing a nuisance to neighbours?

What a way to govern a country! Forget about policies, forget about maintaining a stable economy, forget about relations with other countries, and forget about creating jobs and attracting investment. Forget vision. That would be in the hands of his “managers” His remit as Prime Minister will be to solve problems like sewage leaks.

Dr Sant reminds me of someone who, when Maltese roads looked like a lunar landscape, used to go out in his ministerial car with his wife taking notes of potholes in the streets. They say that the local stationary store made a fortune selling notebooks.

Ladies and gentlemen: here is New Labour!
