Dingli mayor Ian Borg, together with the rest of the council members organised a full day of activities on Sunday 16 September to commemorate ‘Jum Had Dingli’. Such activities were coordinated by Mario Camilleri and the aim was to have a variety of events which will involve the various committees, clubs and organisations from the locality.
Mass at the Dingli Parish Church was celebrated by Mons. Louis Camilleri. The ‘Regina Coeli’ choir took an active part in this mass. After mass, a band parade was held from the parish church to ‘Gnien il-Haddiem’ by the Dingli Scouts group and Girl Guides.
A crafts exhibition was later opened at the day centre. This exhibition was a showcase of work done by local elderly people that attend such centre and also by the children who for the past months have been attending ‘Skola Sajf’ at the Dingli Primary School.
At ‘Gnien il-Haddiem’ there was the inauguration of a mini-pitch with artificial turf, by the president of the Malta Football Association, Dr. Joseph Mifsud LL.D together with Mr Borg. After such inauguration, the Dingli Swallows Club and Nursery organised a 5-a-side football tournament.
In the evening, the Dingli Scouts Band marched around the main streets of Dingli and this was followed by a commemorative event at the Guze Ebejer Primary School grounds. This event was presented by Charles Abela Mizzi during which there was a concert by the St Maria Band Club together with a feature about the work done in these past two years by the Dingli Local Council and two power point presentations on the history of Dingli and also on people from Dingli that left a trade mark not just in the locality but also in Malta. These two presentations were prepared by ‘Ghaqda Talent Dingli’. Apart from this, the main focus during this event was ‘Gieh Had Dingli’ which was presented by Mr Borg to Chev. Dr. Anthony Abela Medici for his voluntary work he did on the remains of St Gorg Preca.
An acknowledgement was awarded to various people residing at Dingli for their work: Police office Godwin Caruana for his work in the community; Joseph Mary Abela as an elderly active person in the community; Joseph Cuschieri for his work among young people; Charles Muscat for his work in culture and Jesmond Zammit for his work in sports.
