Black Spot

Malta Independent Monday, 24 September 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Black spots on St Andrew’s Road in Swieqi are many, but one which appears to have been badly missed out by the authorities is the one opposite the bus stop by the ‘Luxol’ former parade ground. The authorities are to blame, and, hopefully, they will get it corrected soonest. Accidents occur here regularly, and these are to be expected,

for obvious reasons. It is incredible that such traffic management should have been permitted by the authorities in the first place!

Traffic, coming down St Andrews Road from Bahar ic-Caghaq, suddenly stops in the middle of the very heavily used main road in order to exit this main thoroughfare for Swieqi, even though there are absolutely no signs to direct drivers. In so doing the vehicles first block and surprise the flow of traffic travelling to St Julian’s, then have to literally race across on-coming traffic (coming from St Julian’s), and enter Triq

il-Qasam and Swieqi this way. This is very wrong and extremely dangerous.

Double lines should be installed immediately at this ‘black spot’ (opposite the bus stop), thus not permitting traffic to cross this main artery and enter Triq il-Qasam from here. Such a practice is against all ‘highway’ regulations, and must also be against local

road rules. It is exceptionally wrong, and very, very dangerous. Stop this please, immediately, and let’s not have any more accidents at this ‘black spot’.

It is not the right way to enter this town. With the present set-up, entrance to Swieqi should be by the traffic lights opposite "Jessy's Bar". And where are the "Swieqi" signs on this road? There are none to be seen. So how should a 'foreigner' know how to get to Swieqi, we all wonder! Not all drivers know the answer/s, unfortunately! Get the signs

up, ADT, please, and soonest!

Incidentally, further down this same St Andrews Road, the same ADT authorities, very correctly, have recently stopped drivers, travelling in the direction of St Julian’s, from entering Swieqi through Triq id-Dris, by having double white lines painted right through this section of our 'highway'; why wasn't the same done opposite the former 'parade ground', one wonders!

Early ADT action re signing and traffic management is called for at this

main junction in Swieqi, please.
