Alternattiva Demokratika spokesperson on environment and energy Ralph Cassar yesterday called for the strict enforcement of hunting laws and for police authorities “to clamp down on hunters who resort to intimidation”.

In a statement, he said that it was unacceptable that a number of hunters are resorting to intimidation against environmentalists and all those who visit the countryside.

Ralph Cassar said: “The countryside belongs to all, the presence armed hunters at certain time of the day ruins the enjoyment of families and individuals who choose to relax in the little countryside left in our country.”

AD said it believes that the Administrative Law Enforcement section cannot possibly be expected to enforce laws regarding everything from VAT to hunting. The creation of specialised units within the police force needs to be considered. Additionally district police need to be aware that they are also there to enforce laws and need to be equipped appropriately.
