Melita played an excellent match as they dominated St Venera Lightnings scoring four goals in the process.

The Amateurs took just five minutes to break the deadlock with Julian Galea’s shot being deflected by Matthew Borg I as the St Venera keeper was completely deceived.

At the other end St Venera were denied by Sapiano off a free-kick by Melvin Agius and on another occasion James Galea hit just wide from close-range.

Melita made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute as Matthew Borg II laid on a perfect pass for Matthew Borg I who dribbled his way past Elvin Attard before plating the ball into an empty net.

Seconds before the end of the first half Melita obtained a third goal with David Azzopardi’s corner-kick being headed in by Matthew Borg II.

The second period was a mere formality with the Amateurs scoring a fourth goal in the 50th minute through Julian Galea.

St Venera came back with various goal scoring opportunities and they finally reduced the arrears in the 73rd minute with Mark Muscat crossing for Alfred Micallef who beat Sapiano with a strong header.

B’ Bugia SP-Mgarr U 2-0

New B’ Bugia signing Jeffrey Zammit was the protagonist in his team’s win over Mgarr United as he scored the two goals that mattered, one in each half.

B’ Bugia broke the deadlock after three minutes with Johan Zammit heading the ball towards Jeffrey Zammit who beat Debattista from close-range. B’ Bugia created other opportunities as they went close through Jeffrey Zammit and Johan Zammit on two occasions.

Mgarr had their moments with Johan Said hitting just wide and on another occasion a Chris Abela volley was saved by Xerxen. In the 38th minute B’ Bugia went close through Johan Zammit with Mgarr replying through Malcolm Bugeja whose free-kick was saved by Xerxen.

B’ Bugia opened on a high note during the second half and in the 53rd minute Edward Azzopardi crossed for Jeffrey Zammit who beat Debattista from close range to make it 2-0.

B’ Bugia maintained the initiative with efforts by Leslie Burke and Ronnie Celeste being saved by Debattista and on another occasion a shot by Jeffrey Zammit was cleared by Johan Said off the goal line. Mgarr’s final efforts were well controlled by a solid B’ Bugia defence.

Lija-St Andrews 1-0

This was a keenly contested match with Anthony Grech’s team, Lija Athletic, taking three important points. Veteran Michael Mangion scored the all-important goal midway through the second period.

Lija came out strongly with Hubert Friggieri hitting just wide after three minutes and on another occasion a strong volley by Beppe Antignolo was saved by Tabone.

The Saints came back with a dangerous shot by Edward Zammit Tabone which went inches wide of the far post and later on a Michael Valenzia free-kick was saved with difficulty by Bonnici.

On 29 minutes a good move between Colin Ciantar and Beppe Antignolo ended with a Glen Barry effort which was saved by Tabone and five minutes before the break, Lija were again close through Barry.

The second half was a balanced affair with the upright denying the Saints a certain goal after three minutes off a header by Michael Ellul.

Lija came back through an Elton Azzopardi effort which just missed the target and a Lydon Cilia shot which was saved by Tabone. In the 70th minute Tabone was again in action when he stopped an attempt by Beppe Antignolo but the Saints’ keeper was beaten in the 75th minute for what proved to be Lija’s winning goal as Daniel Scerri’s pass was picked up by Michael Mangion who hit home from close range.

The Saints tried to level the score but the best chance belonged to Lija with Lydon Cilia, all alone in font of goal, shooting straight into Tabone’s outstretched hands.

San Gwann-Sirens 1-1

This is a fair result with San Gwann having goalkeeper Justin Spiteri sent off early on in the second half but they were still good enough to come back and equalise through Sergio Hili late in the match.

San Gwann dictated the run of play during the first half and in the 3rd minute the Sirens’ keeper, Romeo Schembri, brought off an excellent save to deny Alan Spiteri.

Then Ryan Newell hit the side netting from a good position and in the 11th minute the same San Gwann player hit a strong shot which was parried by Schembri.

At the other end Sirens were close trough Adrian Galea with San Gwann having two clear chances through Sergio Hili and Malcolm Marmara which went inches wide of the far post.

On 39 minutes the Sirens’ keeper saved off a shot by Alan Spiteri.

The Saints suffered a severe setback in the 48th minute when they lost their goalkeeper Justin Spiteri who was shown the red card for a foul on Giovanni Galea who had a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Sirens went close through Ryan Theuma with San Gwann being denied by Schembri off a Keith Fabri shot in the 69th minute.

On 73 minutes Sirens’ striker Mark Sciberras was fouled by reserve keeper Axisa and from the penalty spot Sirens’ captain Etienne Bonnici made no mistake to put his team 1-0 in front.

Then Sirens were twice denied by Axisa off attempts by Ryan Theuma and Giovanni Galea but it was San Gwann who managed to score in the 83rd minute as Zammit Fava’s free-kick was headed in by Sergio Hili for the Saints’ merited equaliser.
