The General Workers’ Union insisted on entering into negotiations with GO with the aim of dismantling the flexipool and having the workers within this group assigned their proper work.

This flexipool was created in February this year at the time when Maltacom started a restructuring process and requested its workers to reapply for their jobs. At the time, the GWU had ordered industrial action.

The GWU said that it was unacceptable for Maltacom to have workers lose their jobs or working conditions. The aim of flexipool was for these workers to be assigned other duties within Maltacom.

However while in these last few weeks the division was in talks with the GO management in this regard, senior management officials from the company were approaching these workers and spurring them to accept the voluntary retirement scheme, the GWU said. The GWU has requested the GO chairman to intervene and ensure that pressure on these workers ends.

The union held a meeting with the committee of workers to decide the measures to be taken in case the response from the GO management is not positive. During the meeting it was also decided that no workers were to commit themselves to the management but were to inform the division instantly if and when they were approached by any member of the management.
