Gozo is continually in the news due to the threats to its environmental qualities. However one has to go in depth to discover where such fuss attitudes really originate from when Gozo is concerned.
My age can tell me when, why and what circumstances led the area for the proposed development in Ramla l-Hamra on the Xaghra side to be first disturbed. In my opinion, the two major political parties should keep their mouth shut on the matter because they both know well what happened and what should happen.
Once the area has been disturbed and in actual fact has never contributed to the tourist industry, there is nothing wrong to turn a white elephant into something much more beneficial. I am sure the proposed development as sanctioned by Mepa has watertight conditions, after such protests from all quarters, to be rated absolutely environment friendly.
I am a native of Gozo and I am in favour of a balanced development because I love Gozo and its people. The environment and the people of Gozo cannot be separated; for their welfare and the common good, they have to move together in harmony.
Some pressure groups, without knowing, tend to be hysterical and egoistic about matters; we see them protesting everywhere to everything. This time I wonder why all this fuss, because Gozo is concerned. After all we will have a mini Santa Maria Estate overlooking Mellieha Bay or a mini Madliena overlooking Bahar ic-Caghaq.
They are both much bigger developments and yet protests have never been so loud.
