Government Replies to AD’s comments about rent laws

Malta Independent Saturday, 29 September 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The government is working hard towards implementing changes in the rent laws to eliminate the injustices in the present system while keeping in mind the fundamental need for adequate housing for everyone.

In a statement replying to recent comments made by Alternattiva Demokratika, the government said these amendments need to be implemented responsibly for the public good.

The statement said that the Family and Social Solidarity Ministry is studying the situation while taking into consideration the information collected during the last census and other statistics.

The ministry is studying the social impact while analysing similar reforms implemented in other countries and a number of proposals have been drawn up.

The statement pointed out that, apart from the legislative amendments needed to remove the anomalies present in the present rent law system, the reform needs to be strengthened with a number of administrative measures and schemes.

These will be presented to the opposition shortly, it said.

It went on to add that this is a very delicate process and that, ideally, there needs to be a responsible agreement between the two political parties.

As a result, “superficial comments like those made by AD on Saturday hinder reaching a solution for this complex problem.”

Furthermore, it is ironic that the same party that boasts of transparency has not yet felt the need to inform the public about the number of signatures it has managed to collect during its referendum campaign.
