Malta’s DTT provider GO is lobbying the authorities for

additional frequencies that could be used for the launch of high definition channels.

It follows the publication of a consultation document, Making Digital Broadcasting Accessible to All, by the Malta Communications Authority and the Malta Broadcasting Authority.

Although GO seems unlikely to face any challenges to its position as the sole DTT provider in Malta, any additional

frequencies will be dependent on coordination with neighbouring countries. Earlier this year, GO acquired local rival Multiplus.

Three frequencies are likely to be made available, said Broadbandtvnews.com, but their award will be dependent upon the provider being able to offer channels of relevance to the Maltese, which is likely to restrict the presence of international broadcasters in the closely knit community.

GO is currently working on an enhancement to its electronic programme guide and has been experimenting on running a secondary languages on channels that are able to make this available.

The consultation will run 7 until December.
