Heritage Malta’s major exhibition on Caravaggio, celebrating the 400th anniversary of Caravaggio’s coming to Malta, was inaugurated yesterday. Nine Caravaggio paintings have been brought to Malta and are exhibited at the National Museum of Archaeology. The exhibition includes a multimedia introduction to Caravaggio and his life, as well as a secondary exhibition of artefacts from that time, including the Wignacourt suit of armour that appears in Caravaggio’s painting, which is in the Louvre. The Museum of Fine Arts is also holding an exhibition of paintings by Caravaggio’s disciples, while the St John’s Museum will be holding yet another exhibition, opening on 11 October, and including yet another Caravaggio – the Portrait of a Knight, which he painted while in Malta. The Heritage Malta exhibition at the National Museum of Archaeology is open from today until 30 November, Monday to Sunday from 9am to 7pm, adults Lm4 and children Lm2.50.
