WasteServ Employees dig up archaeological site

Malta Independent Sunday, 30 September 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

WasteServ employees have been digging up archaeological remains in the Tal-Kus area near Mgarr ix-Xini, Xewkija local council angrily claimed yesterday.

The work is part of the project to provide a waste treatment plant for Gozo.

In July, the Cultural Heritage Superintendence had insisted on the importance of this site and of it not being damaged.

But yesterday morning a WasteServ digger began drilling through the site.

Xewkija local council asked for, and obtained, a Prohibitory Injunction to stop WasteServ from “damaging for ever” this unique place and its history, but the local council also claimed that WasteServ had ignored this injunction and had continued with the work.
