Yet another mother has called in to say that her doctor has not been supportive of her decision to continue breastfeeding her baby. Not only this, but that he also gave her incorrect information regarding breastfeeding which is clearly against global recommendations given by the World Health Organisation, and if his wishes were adhered to would be detrimental to the baby concerned.
This is amazing to hear in this day and age where science is continually coming up with evidence that breastfeeding is best for babies for up to two years and beyond. The health benefits to mothers and babies are too numerous to mention here.
Malta Breastfeeding Foundation is currently compiling a list of doctors, including obstetricians and paediatricians who know enough about breastfeeding to give correct information and who have shown that they have supported mothers in breastfeeding in ways that help to increase the mothers’ confidence to continue breastfeeding.
With this in mind the foundation would like to encourage mothers and any other interested persons to write in with names and contact details of these doctors.
