Malta Independent Wednesday, 3 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The Amateurs won the St. Julian's derby match after beating St. Andrews in a keen match decided by a first half strike by Matthew Borg I.

Early on St. Andrews showed the better touches and they were close twice as efforts by Jonathan Briscoe White and Patrick Briscoe White just missed the target. Melita broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute with David Azzopardi's corner-kick being headed in by Matthew Borg I.

Five minutes later Michael Calleja headed in for what appeared to be the Saints' equaliser but Calleja was ruled to be in an offside position and the goal was annulled.

Then a Michael Valenzia free-kick went just high over the bar and then attempts by Michael Calleja and Adrian Galea were parried by Sapiano.

The Saints pushed forward during the second-half and early on they were close through Andrew Tabone, Jonathan Briscoe White and Anthony Gera.

Melita replied through dangerous efforts by Mark Hyzler and Matthew Borg I, the latter wasting a clear opportunity in the 72nd minute.

Five minutes later the Saints lost Michael Valenzia who was sent off following an incident with the Melita supporters.

Melita were then denied by Tabone who saved well off a Matthew Borg I volley. In injury time, Saints' defensive player Andrew Camilleri Kamsky was booked for a second time and was also sent off by referee Spiteri.

Zurrieq-Rabat 1-2

Rabat held the initiative for long stretches during the first half but it was Zurrieq who created the first goal scoring opportunity through Joe Lia whose shot was saved by Spiteri.

St.Venera L-B'Bugia SP 0-1

B' Bugia played the better football throughout the first half with Leslie Burke going very close early on. They took the lead on 13 minutes with Jason Cassar crossing from the right flank and ex-St.Venera schemer Jeffrey Zammit headed in past Caruana.

St. Venera lacked punch upfront and it was again B' Bugia who created a clear opportunity through Johan Zammit whose strong shot was blocked by St. Venera central defender Clint Abela.

B' Bugia were again close through Jeffrey Zammit and in the 35th minute the post denied them off a Leslie Burke crosshot.

The Lightnings gained the initiative after the break with the crossbar denying them off a shot by Mark Grech after just four minutes.
