MLP Leader calls for more compassion

Malta Independent Friday, 5 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Labour leader Alfred Sant yesterday visited a 94-year-old woman who is refusing to leave her residence in spite of construction work that is taking place around her Sliema home.

Yolanda Angileri, an MLP statement said, has been living in this house for 67 years. The work involves the construction of 28 apartments, 19 garages and space for another 17 cars.

The MLP said that the developers are putting pressure on the elderly woman to leave her home, and the woman has also been requested to attend a court sitting.

Dr Sant expressed solidarity with the woman, saying that more compassion should be shown for her case. It is not acceptable that this woman is being put under so much pressure, he added.

Dr Sant said that he understood that development in the area has to take place, but he said that the elderly woman should not be treated this way.
