Full-time employment

A comparison between the provisional data for June 2007 and June 2006 indicates that full-time employment increased by 587 persons. The private sector increased by 1,184 persons, whereas the public sector decreased by 597 persons, the National Statistics Office reported yesterday.

With specific reference to the private sector, an increase in employment took place in real estate, renting and business activities. This sector includes accounting and auditing activities, business and management consultancy, architectural and engineering activities, advertising, security activities, industrial cleaning and call centres.

Growth in employment also occurred in community, social and personal services activities (+347 persons). This includes betting companies and entertainment activities, among other services. Other domains within the private sector which reported a growth in employment, included education (+111 persons) and health and social work (+74 persons).

On the other hand, the main domains within the private sector which have seen a drop in employment were: hotels and restaurants (-307), manufacturing (-332); and transport, storage and communication (-489).

In the 12 months to June 2007, employment in the public sector went down by 597. The principal domains in which this decline took place were: transport, storage and communication (-233 persons); construction (-184 persons); and electricity, gas and water supply (-153 persons). Two exceptions to this declining trend were the domains of public administration (+146 persons) and health and social work activities (+98 persons).

Part-time employment

Provisional data for June 2007 indicate that total part-time employment rose by 3,130 persons over the same month in 2006. This increase included 1,182 persons whose part-time job is their secondary occupation and 1,948 persons whose part-time job is their primary occupation. The principal domains which have seen an increase in part-time jobs as secondary employment were: real estate, renting and business activities (+450 persons) and wholesale and retail trade (+208 persons).

These were also the domains that registered rises in part-time jobs as primary occupations

(+649 persons) and wholesale and retail trade (+415 persons).

Apprentices, trainees and students

When comparing the figures for June 2007 and June 2006, it transpires that the number of

apprentices, students and trainees dropped by 14.1 per cent.
