Section ‘A’

Qrendi-Xghajra T 0-1

In the initial stages play ensued in the midfield sector but gradually Xghajra played the better football.

Qrendi were close after five minutes through Joseph Mercieca with Xghajra responding through Anthony Brignone whose volley was blocked by the Qrendi keeper.

In the 31st minute Xghajra took a deserved lead through Alex Azzopardi and just before the break an attempt by Jovil Abela was well saved by Mascena. Five minutes after the restart Xghajra brought the best out of Mascena off a low shot by Lizio Grech and the Qrendi keeper was again in action on the hour to stop an Alex Azzopardi volley.

Qrendi came back through two dangerous free-kicks taken by Saviour Sacco and Josef Mansueto but late in the match Xghajra were close through Neil Attard.

Zebbug R-Mtarfa 3-0

Zebbug went close in the opening minutes through Keith Farrugia and Ramon Bonello with Mtarfa coming back strongly as shots by Richard attard and Johan Briffa were well saved by Pace.

In the 17th minute Zebbug took the lead through a close-range shot by Jeremy Gatt and then they hit the crossbar off a Gordon Mallia volley.

On 24 minutes Zebbug increased their lead with Gordon Mallia heading in from Cachia’s well-taken corner-kick and then they were denied by the Mtarfa substitute keeper on various occasions.

In the 56th minute Zebbug wasted a glaring opportunity through Ramon Bonello after a Ryan Attard volley had bounced off the post but four minutes later a good move between Keith Farrugia and Jeremy Gatt allowed Ramon Bonello to make it 3-0 from close-range.

Although Zebbug continued to dictate the run of play they failed to add on to their tally.

Attard-Ghaxaq 4-0

Attard played the better football throughout the first period and after just two minutes a Yan Grech goal was disallowed for a foul on Ghaxaq keeper Celeste.

However in the fourth minute lack of understanding between Celeste and Timothy Cassar allowed Elon Cassar to put Attard 1-0 ahead.

Attard then went close through Fabian Cutajar and Clive Lanzon whose shots were saved by Celeste with Ghaxaq’s reply producing attempts by Norbert Ellul and Cristian Cristiano which went inches wide of the far post.

On 34 minutes Attard’s player Clayton Axisa was sent off following a second yellow card but barely three minutes later an error by Celeste allowed Elon Cassar to make it 2-0 for Attard.

Ghaxaq were unlucky to hit the crossbar through Timothy Forace but it was Attard who managed to score in the 56th minute through Firas Aboulezz following a personal effort.

In the 72nd minute a header by Firas was cleared off the goal line but Attard managed to add on to their advantage in the 84th minute with a fourth goal scored by Clive Lanzon

Mdina K-Fgura 0-2

After four minutes the Fgura custodian Ranier Farrugia did well to save Ayrton Buhagiar’s header and then shots by James Vella and Nicholas Micallef just missed the target.

Fgura broke the deadlock in the 21st minute through Clint Ellul who beat Sciberras with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Mdina came back through two efforts by Joe Debono which were saved by Ranier Farrugia.

Mdina retained the initiative after the change of ends but Fgura were more effective and they increased their lead in the 57th minute through an excellent shot by Clayton Garzia following a good move by Daniel Said.

At the other end Mdina were close through Nicholas Micallef and Ayrton Buhagiar.

Section ‘B’

Kirkop-Gharghur 0-2

The first half was completely dominated by both sets of defenders as play resulted mainly in midfield.

Gharghur went close through an Anthony Sammut free-kick as Kirkop came back through Benoit Buhagiar who was denied by a fine save by Gharghur’s keeper Florian Piscopo.

Ten minutes before the end of the first period Gharghur hit the crossbar through Marvic Grech and from the rebound Antonello Brincat managed to beat Stephen Mizzi.

The second period was much more exciting with both teams creating various goal scoring opportunities.

Kirkop lost their captain Alan Deidun in the 81st minute as he was sent off following an incident with a Gharghur player. Three minutes later Gharghur assured themselves of an important win as Karl Vella Petroni hit in their second goal.

Pembroke Ath-Gzira 1-0

After three minutes Gzira were close with Gaetano Farrugia heading just wide from a Darren Caruana free-kick.

The Pembroke goalkeeper brought off two excellent saves to deny Nico Corito and Neil Zarb Cousin and two minutes before the break a point-blank shot by Pembroke’s striker Liam Camilleri was blocked by Camilleri.

Gzira continued to press forward after the change of ends with the Pembroke keeper bringing off difficult saves off attempts by James Tabone and Hashem but on 62 minute Pembroke opened the score through Jacques Scerri’s header after a shot by Kevin Vella had bounced off the crossbar.

Gzira pushed forward but they wasted some easy chances.
