The government is in the process of coordinating a number of road maintenance projects that will be financed or co-financed by European Union funds.

Towards the end of this month, the Contracts Department is expected to issue a call for tenders for Marsascala bypass and later another for Valletta Road, leading to Zurrieq.

Along with another two road maintenance projects in Gozo – Ta’ Pinu Road and Xlendi Road – the European Regional Development Fund (EDRF) will co-finance the works.

Moreover, as Roads and Urban Development Minister Jesmond Mugliett had announced in Parliament, Marfa Road, stretching from Ghadira to Cirkewwa, will be reconstructed through the European Cohesion Fund.

In this respect, the ministry is currently awaiting approval of a whole road maintenance programme, which does not only include Marfa Road, but also the Marsa junction, the stretch of road leading from Xewkija to Victoria, the new road to Viset, Council of Europe Road in Luqa, as well as the Kappara and St Andrews junctions.

The Transport Authority is currently accepting tenders for road maintenance work to be carried out along the Valletta ring road. This forms part of preparations for the first-ever Grand Prix de Malte, a rally for classic cars, scheduled to take place on 27 and 28 October.
