Preparatory works for the demolition of the existing structures on the SmartCity Malta site to clear the area for construction have begun, the developers said yesterday.
The demolition involves dismantling about 20 old industrial buildings to prepare the ground for the development of SmartCity Malta, a new self-sustained knowledge-based industry township being developed in a joint venture between Dubai-based SmartCity and the government of Malta.
SmartCity Malta yesterday said the demolition will be launched officially at an event to be held over the coming weeks. The entire demolition will be guided by a comprehensive plan developed by SmartCity with inputs from the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, government ministries and departments, local councils, non-governmental organisations and neighbouring residents.
In conformity with SmartCity’s commitment to sustainable development, various procedures have been implemented to mitigate any environmental impact, minimise inconvenience to neighbours and respect the natural and historical context of Malta.
Waste generated from the site will be disposed according to local and MEPA regulations. The masonry taken down by the demolition will be recycled to construct walls that will prevent waste material from being carried away. Various measures have been put in place to minimise dust pollution.
These, among others, include wheel washing facilities for dump trucks exiting the site. Working hours have been carefully scheduled to minimise nuisance to neighbouring residents.
Special procedures have also been taken to ensure the protection of Fort St Rocco, the 19th century fortification situated in close proximity to the SmartCity Malta site.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) staff have been engaged to ensure that all staff on site follow strict health and safety procedures. The entire site is being fenced off to ensure safety and security for the public. Hazardous materials left over from previous industrial uses are also being cleared, the developers said.
The process marks a major stage in the development of the SmartCity Malta project. Last month, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi unveiled the master plan for SmartCity Malta at Gitex Technology Week, the largest ICT exhibition in the Middle East held in Dubai.
SmartCity Malta will create a complete business and community infrastructure for knowledge-based industries. Its components include intelligent buildings offering office space as well as residential, retail, hospitality and recreational facilities which provide both a high-quality work environment and lifestyle for knowledge workers.
