Since the age of nine Karl would always help his mother while she was cooking – his salad dressings were his forte, he recalls. He always wanted to be a chef so he first channelled his creativity into the culinary world and won much acclaim both locally and internationally.

Feeling the need to continue exploring the medium of paint in greater depth, he decided to leave a successful and established career to venture abroad for more inspiration… he travelled to Asia, Australia and the Middle East.

He now works for a Middle Eastern Airline – as a chef on board. Jet setting around the world; the free time he has allows him to pursue his art. ”It’s a cool job and it’s perfect!” he likes saying. He has also recently opened a small media company specialising in niche markets that are missing in the region – mainly catering and events.

Nature and life itself are his muses and in his first exhibition he shares what he thinks is a fearless, “journey to the soul”. His use of colour and imagination have been described as “bold, passionate and inventive”, works have been commissioned while living in Australia and currently Bahrain.

Gallery G of 4, Sir Ugo Mifsud Street, Lija, are presently hosting an exhibition of Karl Mallia’s works until 26 October.

Managing my own Art Café/Bistro – everything designed by me!

Travelling – shoes – retro items.

My vast collection of Buddha statues.

Singing and to make people laugh!
