I have heard, as well as read in several papers, that the Gozo cathedral parishioners were the only ones who were unhappy with the bishop’s musical-chair policy regarding the local archpriests. I think such remarks are unfounded simply because others complained as well. Some of the archpriests had just begun to get used to their parishioners and were dismissed just like that!

One must bear in mind that even the new archpriest at the cathedral, the Rev. Attard, is as much a victim as the ex-archpriest Rev. Gauci because he has been dropped off at the deep end into unknown waters.

And if the parishioners of the cathedral are in such a downhearted state, then isn’t that a sign of how respected Rev Gauci was and is? No one celebrates when one loses someone, or something good. That is why good shepherds don’t get rid of sheep that are productive but only those that are old and winding down. Isn’t it strange, then, that the bishop, in his policy of change, didn’t include certain archpriests who have been around since time immemorial, and whose their terms have been extended!
